How To Treat Sun Damaged Skin

Spa in Cary, NCThis time of year we all experience a little sunburn. Some of us deal with more than that. There's nothing worse than a bad sunburn on vacation or while you're enjoying a summer break. There are several ways, however, that you can battle this damage to the skin. Using natural treatments will not only be a great way to promote healthy skin, but also help heal the sun damage, as well.

Aloe Vera

Everyone knows that this natural herb is great for burns but did you know that it’s one of the best ways to reduce sunburn and wound healing? It’s been proven that treating a fresh burn or wound with aloe vera can almost completely heal it in a short amount of time. With aloe, you can apply immediately and as needed to ensure great results.

Calendula Oil

Oils are naturally more soothing than creams so choosing this one is a great way to heal rashes or burns.

Comfrey

The leaves of this herb are great for actually regenerating new skin cells. To use, boil the leaves into a tea and then use a cotton ball to apply it to affected area. Great for sunburn and other irritations of the skin. You can use it a few times every day until the problem area is healed.

Green Tea

Not only can you use green tea to heal a sunburn, but you can also use it to prevent it, as well. Like comfrey, green tea leaves are able to stimulate new skin cell growth. It will promote healing and act as a calming agent for red, irritated or inflamed skin.

Horsetail

When applied to the affected area, horsetail will help rebuild body tissue. It does so by using the silica within the plant. Horsetail helps our natural collagen produce, hence, speeding the healing process along. This plant works great for animal wounds, as well.

Tamanu Oil

For those that experience a bad sunburn during the day, apply this oil at night and you’ll probably experience a disappearing act. Tamanu oil comes from tropical tree nuts and can eliminate inflammation and pain that comes from sunburn. This oil comes from the nut of a tropical tree and will help eliminate pain and tame inflammation.

Yarrow

Whether you choose to use yarrow in a cooling bath or boiled in tea, this root is a great pain reliever and helps to calm irritated skin.

Cucumber

Slice and apply directly to the skin. This is great for a sunburned face! Cucumber has caffeic acid and vitamin C. Both of these help with inflammation issues.

Echinacea

Great for rejuvenating damaged collagen in the skin, you’ll find that this leave can firm the skin. It can also get rid of sunburn. Brew it in a tea to sooth irritated skin, as well.

Plaintain

You might be thinking that this herb has nothing to do with healing skin, but it actually does. It is a natural anti-inflammatory as well as a plant that contains allatoins. This helps with skin healing. You can use it alone or add it to a mix of aloe vera, brewed green tea and honey. To add another healing effect, consider adding baking soda to the mix, as well.
